UPDATE: Charlton has just unveiled a vibrant new vision for its Christmas decorations, thanks to the innovative efforts of the volunteer group Community Spark. This initiative, led by three passionate locals, aims to transform the main street into a festive wonderland, enhancing the holiday spirit in the town as of December 9, 2025.
The creative trio of Jodie Quinn, Bronwyn Fisher, and Tanya Windsor spearheaded the project, rallying around 18 volunteers to bring festive cheer to Charlton. “Everyone felt that Charlton needed a lift,” Jodie stated, emphasizing their goal to inspire community involvement in decorating homes and public spaces.
This year’s Christmas display features a unique Australian twist, steering clear of traditional snow themes. Notable highlights include a quirky painting of a vintage ute adorned with a Christmas tree and a stunning montage of six white boomers pulling a Holden loaded with gifts. Both installations illuminate the night with solar power, captivating passers-by and enhancing the holiday atmosphere.
Incorporating sustainability, the decorations prominently feature upcycled materials, showcasing the community’s commitment to eco-friendly practices. Additionally, twelve picture boards, created by local artist Brian Townsend, have replaced European icons with Australian symbols, inviting residents to embark on a festive “treasure hunt” throughout the town. Completed lists can be submitted for a chance to win movie passes, further encouraging local engagement.
The festive efforts extend beyond decorations, as local schools and businesses have joined the initiative. Students from St. Joseph’s School contributed customized hand-painted stars, while Charlton College created a standalone Christmas tree decorated with colorful baubles. Notably, students from Flexible Learning Options (FLO) crafted lanterns from discarded tins, adorning key locations like the Traveller’s Rest and the Band Rotunda.
The community’s festive transformation also features a dazzling display on the James Paterson Bridge, wrapped in red tinsel and floral arrangements, creating a welcoming entrance to the town. “We hope this year’s effort will spark a vibrant direction for future displays,” Jodie remarked, encouraging all residents to participate in making Charlton shine.
Community Spark has distributed flyers outlining their mission, seeking feedback from residents on the new decorations. Forms are available at several local locations, including the Charlton Post Office and the Charlton Neighbourhood House. Acknowledgment boards thanking sponsors and supporters are prominently displayed, demonstrating the community’s collective effort.
Residents are encouraged to explore the festive displays, which will remain up until January 4, allowing ample opportunity for families and friends to capture “selfies” and share Charlton’s renewed Aussie celebration on social media.
As the holiday season unfolds, Charlton’s refreshed decorations serve as a testament to community spirit and creativity, uniting residents in a joyful celebration of Christmas.
