URGENT UPDATE: Community leaders in Point Cook are rallying locals to save the Point Cook Pop Up Park from possible closure. The park, located on a closed section of Murnong Street at the Point Cook Town Centre, has been a vital community space since its launch by CoLocal in 2018. As of today, the situation is critical, with the park’s future hanging in the balance.
Just announced: Stockland, the shopping centre’s owner, plans to reopen the road, which would effectively shut down the park. This move has sparked outrage among local residents who cherish the area for its role in fostering community connections. CoLocal founder Sara Mitchell emphasized the park’s importance, stating, “It connects the very heart of the community.” She added, “It’s about people getting to know their neighbours and it is incredibly important that we are actually out there having fun with one another.”
The park has been a hub for cultural events, including festivals celebrating African and Latino traditions. Poly Kiyaga, who organizes the African Festival, noted, “It has become an important space to showcase African culture.” He expressed concern over the park’s uncertain future, stating, “We need to show the community who we are and we can do it here in this space.”
Local resident Luciana Manrique, who hosted the Latino Festival in 2023, shared her personal connection to the park, saying, “Using the space has given me the opportunity to make friends.” She emphasized its role in combating social isolation, particularly for newcomers to Australia.
Stockland’s spokesperson defended the decision to reopen the road, citing declining engagement with the park. They stated, “After eight years, the community and customers are no longer engaging with the space, with minimal everyday use and participation in special events declining.”
The community has until September 15, 2025, to provide feedback on the park’s future, with engagement sessions scheduled for September 7 and September 11. Locals are encouraged to voice their opinions through the council’s feedback portal: here.
As the deadline approaches, the fight to preserve this beloved community space intensifies. Residents are urged to come together and make their voices heard to ensure the Point Cook Pop Up Park remains a vibrant part of their neighborhood. The outcome of this critical situation will impact not only local businesses but the fabric of community life in Point Cook. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
