Dungowan Hotel Revamps, Celebrates Unique History with Events

UPDATE: The Dungowan Hotel is making headlines with exciting new events and a vibrant revival of its rich history. Just recently, owners Susie and Grant Biffin announced a series of unique attractions aimed at drawing visitors to the beloved establishment, which has been a cornerstone of the community since it opened in 1868.

The Dungowan Hotel, located just outside Tamworth, has a storied past that includes a miniature zoo run by former hotelier John “Jock” Eason in the 1950s and 60s. The zoo featured native birds, emus, and even a monkey named Chico. Long-serving publican Kevin Smith reminisced, “It was huge,” highlighting how the pub attracted crowds of over 300 people on Sundays, when women and children picnicked outside while men enjoyed drinks inside.

This revival comes as the Biffins take the reins of the hotel, which had been struggling before their arrival in late 2022. Grant humorously recalled, “I think we accidentally bought the pub,” after a few too many beers with Kevin. The couple has since transformed the venue, connecting the bar to the beer garden and launching exciting events like pig racing and yabbie races on Australia Day.

The Dungowan Hotel has not only survived but thrived through changing times and community needs. Kevin Smith, who has served as publican for 24 years, noted the hotel’s evolution, including an era when public drinking laws restricted women and children from bars. “It was a different world back then,” he reflected.

Today, the Biffins are focused on fostering a sense of community while attracting visitors from afar. “We’re trying to draw people from out of town and get them to come and support the pub,” Susie stated, emphasizing their commitment to enhancing the local experience.

The hotel’s history is not without its darker moments. A tragic fire in 1913 claimed the life of a young boy, a reminder of the establishment’s long-standing ties to the community. However, the Dungowan Hotel continues to be a place where memories are made, whether through shared drinks, local events, or the enduring stories of its patrons.

As the Dungowan Hotel embraces its unique legacy and contemporary changes, community members are encouraged to visit and partake in the upcoming events. With the Biffins at the helm, the historic venue is poised for a bright future.

Stay tuned for more developments as the Dungowan Hotel continues to grow and adapt, reaffirming its status as a beloved institution in the heart of New South Wales.
