UPDATE: An elderly driver has been hospitalized following a serious crash on the NSW Far South Coast late Thursday evening, August 7. Emergency services rushed to the scene at 7:20 PM on the Princes Highway near Wolumla, south of Bega, after reports of a single-vehicle incident.
Authorities confirmed that the vehicle left the roadway, with a NSW Police spokesperson stating, “It appeared a single vehicle had come off the road.” No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Paramedics from NSW Ambulance transported the male driver, believed to be in his 70s, to South East Regional Hospital in Bega, where he is being treated for shoulder injuries.
This crash comes on the heels of a tragic incident earlier that day. Just hours before, at approximately 11:15 AM, another crash occurred on the same highway at Frogs Hollow, about 13 kilometers south of Bega. A utility vehicle collided with a car and a truck, resulting in the death of the male driver of the utility. He was pronounced dead at the scene, with his identity yet to be confirmed. The driver of the truck, also male, was not injured but was taken to the same hospital for mandatory testing.
Officers from the South Coast Police District have established a crime scene and initiated an investigation into the earlier fatal crash. A report will be prepared for the Coroner, highlighting the urgency of this developing situation.
Drivers in the area are advised to remain cautious and expect delays as investigations continue. Both incidents underline the critical need for road safety, especially on busy highways. Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.
