BREAKING: The Victorian State Government has just approved a groundbreaking $300 million food manufacturing plant in Dooen, set to revolutionize local agriculture and food production. This major development, announced today, is spearheaded by Farm Frites, a leading global producer of frozen potato products, known for supplying major fast-food chains including KFC and Hungry Jacks.
The new facility, located within the Wimmera Agriculture and Logistics Hub, is expected to create 250 new jobs for the local community once it becomes operational in 2027. This plant will have a remarkable capacity to process up to 250,000 tonnes of Australian-grown potatoes each year, marking a significant boost for local farmers and the agriculture sector.
Acting Mayor of Horsham Rural City, Brian Klowss, expressed his enthusiasm: “This is a huge tick of approval for our agricultural community. It will support Australian farmers, create jobs for local workers, and offer training and career opportunities for students.”
The establishment of this facility is a vital step towards enhancing food security within Australia, as it positions the region as a critical player in both domestic and export food supply chains. Farm Frites is recognized globally as one of the main potato growers and seed potato breeders, supplying products to over 100 countries from its existing factories in the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, and Egypt.
This plant will be Farm Frites’ first in the southern hemisphere, underscoring the importance of Horsham’s agricultural history and its excellent transport links. Kieran Prestidge, General Manager of Farm Frites Australia, stated, “Dooen is perfectly located between the best growing regions in Australia and has excellent road and rail links, which will help us put more Australian produce on plates and tables all around the country.”
The planning permit for this facility was granted under the Victorian State Government’s Development Facilitation Program, designed to expedite approvals for projects that promise substantial economic investment in the region.
As Victorian authorities confirm this major development, community members and local farmers alike are poised to benefit greatly from the influx of jobs and economic activity. The establishment of the Farm Frites plant is more than just a business expansion; it represents a commitment to enhancing the local economy and supporting the backbone of Australia’s agricultural sector.
This announcement comes at a critical time, as the region seeks to solidify its role in the national food supply chain and bolster job creation. The local community is eagerly awaiting the impact this new facility will have on their livelihoods and the agricultural landscape.
