UPDATE: A coroner has confirmed that a father’s improper modifications to a quad bike led to the tragic death of his 16-year-old son in rural Tasmania. The boy’s body was discovered on a gravel forestry road, highlighting urgent safety concerns surrounding DIY maintenance practices.
The fatal incident occurred in 2023, just two weeks after the father fitted aftermarket wheels purchased from eBay. Coroner Simon Cooper reported that the incorrect wheel nuts used were tapered, not flat, causing one rear wheel to detach while the teenager was riding at high speed. “Tragically, the after-market rims were fitted by his father, who admitted he was aware the nuts were not suitable but felt they were adequate,” Cooper stated in his findings released on Tuesday.
Witnesses reported seeing the boy riding “a little too quickly” on public streets, despite the quad bike not being registered for road use. The boy was not wearing a properly fitted helmet at the time of the accident, which was found several meters away from his body.
Since 2011, quad bike accidents have claimed 234 lives across Australia, making them a leading cause of death and injury on farms. Authorities are reiterating that children under 16 should never operate adult-sized quad bikes. Legally, businesses could face criminal charges for allowing such practices in workplace settings.
In his report, Cooper emphasized the inherent dangers of quad bikes, stating they should never be ridden by children. He did not issue formal recommendations but stressed the importance of using the correct nuts for wheel attachments and the need for consumers to ensure that parts bought online are appropriate for their intended use.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with inadequate knowledge in vehicle modifications. Cooper urged that no one should attempt to fit wheels to quad bikes without the necessary experience, expertise, or qualifications.
Authorities continue to call for increased awareness and safety measures to prevent further tragedies, as the community remains shaken by this heartbreaking loss.
