Greeley Stampede to Implement Weapons Detection Systems in 2026

The Greeley Stampede announced that it will introduce Weapons Detection Systems (WDS) at all park entrances beginning in June 2026. This initiative aims to enhance security by preventing illegal weapons from entering the popular event in Greeley, Colorado.

According to the Stampede organizers, the decision to implement these systems reflects a commitment to maintaining safety while also improving the overall guest experience. The event has seen significant growth in recent years, prompting the need to align with current industry standards. The organizers stated in a press release, “With the growth that the event is experiencing, the Stampede committee and staff are committed to keeping up with current event industry standards as well as improving the guest experience, safety, and security.”

Advanced Security Features

The WDS will utilize artificial intelligence technology to differentiate between everyday items, such as keys and mobile phones, and potential threats based on their shape and density. Guests will simply walk through the system without needing to remove personal belongings from their pockets or bags, unless the system indicates a possible threat.

“This is a simple system with minimum interruption to the flow of people coming into the park,” said Jon Patton, Security Chairman for the Greeley Stampede. “Most won’t even know that they have walked through it, unlike a traditional metal detector.” The aim is to create a seamless entry experience while prioritizing safety and security.

In addition to the WDS, guests who possess a concealed carry permit will be required to present their permit for verification before entering the park. Permits must be issued by the state of Colorado or a state that has reciprocity agreements with Colorado.

Collaboration with Local Authorities

The Greeley Stampede will also continue to enforce its clear bag policy alongside the new weapons detection system. While the WDS focuses on detecting firearms, it does not screen for other prohibited items, emphasizing the need for guests to adhere to existing regulations.

Support for the initiative comes from the Weld County Sheriff’s Office and the Greeley Police Department, both of which are committed to ensuring public safety during the event. “The Weld County Sheriff’s Office is proud to collaborate with the Greeley Stampede Committee in implementing the new weapons detection system,” stated Steve Reams, Weld County Sheriff. He added, “This policy enhances our coordinated efforts with the Greeley Police Department, strengthening our ability to provide effective public safety services as well as protect our citizens’ lawful right to concealed carry.”

The Greeley Stampede is scheduled to take place from June 24 to July 5, 2026. As the event approaches, organizers are focused on ensuring that it remains a welcoming and family-friendly celebration while reinforcing a commitment to safety.
