UPDATE: The Glen Orden Hawks have made history by securing a second consecutive premiership in the Western Netball League division 1 competition on October 20, 2023. This remarkable feat comes alongside their division 2 team clinching back-to-back titles as well, marking a night of double triumph.
The Hawks faced off against the rapidly improving Sunshine Schwartz, jumping to an impressive 18-12 lead in the first quarter. By halftime, the Hawks had established a commanding 12-goal advantage, putting them on the brink of victory. Despite a tighter second half, Glen Orden held on for a decisive 65-52 win. Star player Payton Simeki shone brightly, scoring 38 goals at an impressive 97 percent accuracy, earning her the title of best on court.
Coach Hicks expressed immense pride in her team, highlighting their resilience and hard work against a growing Sunshine program. “To all my coaches and all the girls… all of that effort. You showed up every week and trusted the process,” Hicks stated. “I’m so proud of you.” At just 16 years old, Simeki has emerged as a key player, transitioning from the division 2 leading goal scorer last season to a vital contributor in the top grade this year.
In the division 2 grand final, the Hawks dominated Altona with a final score of 35-20, showcasing their strength throughout the match. Defender Honor Brodie was named best on court for her exceptional performance.
The night’s celebrations don’t end here; the Hawks have other five teams competing in grand finals this Friday. Their division 3, 4, 6, and 7 sides advanced following successful preliminary finals, joining the division 5 team in the finals. Hicks, speaking prior to the semi-finals, noted the historic significance of having all seven teams reach the grand finals. “It will be challenging, but we will give it a red hot crack,” she said, acknowledging the tough road ahead.
In a competitive league, Sunshine will also send four teams to the grand finals, following their division 5 victory on Friday night. Additionally, Hobsons Bay and Braybrook will field teams in the finals, intensifying the excitement across the league.
With this incredible display of skill and teamwork, the Hawks have not only solidified their place in the Western Netball League but have also inspired their community and fans. As the grand finals approach, anticipation is building for what promises to be another thrilling chapter in their season.
