Holbrook Public School Celebrates 150 Years with Special Assembly

UPDATE: Holbrook Public School just celebrated its 150th anniversary on November 6, 2023, with a vibrant assembly that brought together former students, current pupils, and staff. The event featured the unveiling of a historic bell, restored after decades of decay, symbolizing the school’s rich legacy.

Among the key highlights was the nostalgic tale shared by district farmer Phil Hunter, a former student from 1955-1963. His amusing recollection of a classroom incident involving a snake captivated the audience. “The teacher had brought in a dead black snake for a biology class,” Hunter recalled. “Some boys attached a string to it and pulled it, leaving the teacher shocked. She screamed and ran out of the room.”

This celebratory assembly, attended by scores of alumni, also served as a reminder of the community’s deep ties to the school. Louise Purss-Semple, the school principal, emphasized the importance of community involvement, saying, “It’s been fabulous in preparing for the celebrations to hear the stories of families.”

The history of Holbrook Public School dates back to July 1875, when it was first established as Germanton Public School. It underwent several name changes, becoming Holbrook in 1915 amid anti-German sentiment during World War I. The school transitioned to Holbrook Central School in 1944, expanding its grade levels from kindergarten to year 12. With the opening of Billabong High School in 1978, it reverted to Holbrook Public School.

The anniversary festivities began earlier in the week on November 3, with students donning attire from 1875 and participating in lessons led by past teachers at the Woolpack Inn Museum. Current students engaged with the history of their school, deepening their connection to its heritage.

The Ross family exemplifies the enduring connection to the school, with a lineage that began with Robert Ross in the 1930s. The tradition continued through his son Russell Ross, daughter-in-law Judy Ross, and granddaughter Claire Ross, culminating in the attendance of young George Ross, just 8 years old, who is currently in year 2. When asked about his favorite part of school, George enthusiastically stated, “just playing sport,” noting that math is his favorite subject.

With an enrollment of around 130 students, Holbrook Public School remains a vital part of the community’s fabric. As the school looks to the future, Principal Purss-Semple’s leadership will guide it through the next chapter, continuing to foster a strong community spirit.

This milestone celebration not only commemorates the past but also reinforces the importance of education and community engagement in shaping future generations. Stay tuned for more updates from Holbrook as they continue to honor their legacy!
