Luke Saunders Inducted into BFNL Hall of Fame in Shocking Honor

BREAKING: Former Gisborne star Luke Saunders has been inducted into the Bendigo Football Netball League (BFNL) Hall of Fame, a surprise announcement that has left him both honored and stunned. This significant recognition comes as part of a larger induction ceremony scheduled for later this month.

In a celebrated career spanning 145 games, Saunders led the Gisborne Bulldogs to five premierships and showcased his talent by representing the league on four occasions and Vic Country three times, even captaining the team once. His stellar performance earned him the prestigious 2005 Michelsen Medal as the best player in the Bendigo league, with a runner-up finish in the next two years.

“It’s a massive honour,” Saunders expressed in an emotional statement. “It was a little bit unexpected and I never saw myself in that way.” He received the news from a board member, describing the call as “really nice” and admitting he was “a bit in shock.”

This honor comes after a two-year absence from the club where he built countless cherished memories, marking a chapter in his life that began at just 22 years old. “I was lucky to be at the Bulldogs during one of the club’s most successful periods,” Saunders reflected. “It was a special time for me and my family.”

Saunders also highlighted the deep roots his family has with the club, recalling that both his father and grandfather played for Gisborne. “It’s a big part of everything that has happened in my life the last 20 years,” he noted, emphasizing the emotional significance of this recognition.

Adding a personal touch, he mentioned his fiancée, Tiana Newman, a star in her own right with two Betty Thompson medals and two premierships. “I would not be surprised if Tiana ends up in there,” he remarked, acknowledging her contributions to the club. Their relationship blossomed at Gisborne, and they share two children, making the club a central part of their family life.

He also expressed admiration for fellow inductee Steven Reaper, recognizing him as a legend of the league. “We played a lot of footy next to each other in the forward line. I’ve always respected him,” said Saunders, indicating that more players from Gisborne may follow in their footsteps in the coming years.

As the induction ceremony approaches, fans and supporters eagerly await the celebration of Saunders’ remarkable achievements. This honor not only highlights his contributions to the game but also signifies the lasting impact of the Bulldogs on his life.

Stay tuned for further updates as the ceremony date approaches, and celebrate this momentous occasion for one of Gisborne’s finest.
