UPDATE: A devastating explosion at a factory in St Marys, Sydney sent flames soaring 150 metres into the sky and a chemical tank flying through the air late Saturday night. The incident occurred at approximately 11 PM at the Kurrajong Rd waste recycling facility, prompting a swift response from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW).
The explosion unleashed a massive fireball, showering concrete blocks and debris onto firefighters battling one of the largest blazes in the area in recent years. Eyewitness reports describe the scene as chaotic, with flames threatening nearby structures as 50 fire trucks and hundreds of firefighters worked tirelessly to control the inferno.
Two firefighters sustained minor injuries to their hands during the operation. The blast was so powerful that it caused walls to collapse in neighboring buildings, raising concerns about the safety of the surrounding area. FRNSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell stated, “This is as big as fires get. Particularly the scale of that explosion, people will be talking about that for a long time.”
The fire has been contained but is expected to smolder throughout Sunday. Authorities confirm that a significant range of different chemicals are fueling the blaze. Hazardous materials officers are currently on-site, and residents are advised to keep their doors and windows shut to mitigate exposure to potentially harmful smoke.
As the situation develops, locals are urged to remain vigilant for updates from emergency services. This incident highlights the dangers present in industrial areas and the quick response required from firefighting teams to protect communities.
