UPDATE: Minstrel has surged to $2.15 favoritsim for the Group 1 $450,000 WA Pacing Cup following an ideal barrier draw at Gloucester Park. The seasoned eight-year-old will start from gate two, a position co-trainer Greg Bond describes as advantageous despite the common belief that barrier one is preferable.
Just announced, the draw sets the stage for an intense showdown, particularly against second favorite Magnificent Storm, who will start from gate eight at $4.50. Bond expressed confidence in Minstrel’s positioning, stating, “Two is preferred to one for us in case we get crossed and he’s stuck away.” This strategic placement allows Minstrel to remain in the running line, which is crucial for his racing style.
Minstrel’s last performance in the Stratton Cup was impressive, where he finished strong after sitting outside Magnificent Storm for the duration of the race. “If the same horse turns up Friday night as was there two weeks ago, we’ll be very happy,” Bond remarked. He anticipates that if Minstrel performs as he did in the Stratton Cup, he will be a formidable contender.
In addition to Minstrel, Bond is also training Gee Heza Sport, currently listed at $34. This horse showed promise in the Nullarbor earlier this year, and Bond believes he can compete well if he stays close to the pace. “If there was a war declared at some stage of the race and he was having a nice trip just off them, he’ll finish off good,” he stated.
The competition intensified with the unexpected scratching of Lavra Joe, which has allowed Golden Lode to enter from barrier ten at $21. This change could impact race dynamics, providing fresh opportunities for other contenders.
Among the top competitors, Mister Smartee is also in the mix, trained by Gary Hall Sr. and listed at $5. Hall has expressed confidence in Mister Smartee’s capabilities, especially after a strong showing in the Stratton Cup. Owner Glen Moore noted that Hall believes the horse has built up to peak performance, with recent track work indicating readiness for the challenge ahead.
Moore anticipates a thrilling race for early positioning, expecting Magnificent Storm to take the lead. He commented, “I think Magnificent Storm will lead, for sure,” emphasizing the critical nature of positioning in the race. “When he did get across and they ran 1:54.7 in the Stratton Cup, he had to really burn.”
As race day approaches, the excitement is palpable. Fans and bettors alike are closely watching these developments, with the WA Pacing Cup set to deliver high-stakes drama. The race is scheduled for Friday night, and all eyes will be on the track as these elite competitors vie for glory.
