URGENT UPDATE: The highly anticipated bookstore, The Book Attic, officially opened its doors in Richmond today, drawing over 150 visitors within hours. This charming new destination, located in the historic stables of the Royal Hotel, promises a unique community experience for local book lovers.
Just a few months ago, friends Julie Wicks and Sally Zarka joked about opening a bookstore during a casual chat on the Blue Mountains Book Trail. That light-hearted conversation quickly transformed into reality when Julie sent Sally a text that changed everything. “I’m really thinking about opening a bookshop—want in?” she proposed.
In just two and a half months, they found the perfect location, signed the lease, and began an impressive transformation of the heritage-listed site. “The walls have so much character,” Julie stated. “We wanted shelves that complemented the space rather than hid it.”
The opening day, coinciding perfectly with the holiday season, was a resounding success. Families, friends, and local residents flocked to browse through a diverse selection of titles, from fiction to gardening, all while enjoying a warm and inviting atmosphere. “It’s been a whirlwind,” Julie reflected. “From a dream to a real business in a few months—it’s hard to believe.”
Community involvement was vital to the shop’s opening. Friends and family helped with everything from building shelves to wiring lights. Their children also contributed, making the store feel handcrafted and deeply personal. “It’s a community-led space,” Sally emphasized. “We want to stock the books that interest our neighbours.”
Looking ahead, The Book Attic plans to host book clubs, author talks, and various community events, solidifying its status as a gathering place for local readers.
The Book Attic is open from Monday to Friday 9:00 AM–5:30 PM, Saturdays 9:00 AM–4:00 PM, and Sundays 10:00 AM–2:00 PM. With the festive season upon us, this new nook is perfectly timed for anyone searching for their next great read or a cozy place to connect with fellow book enthusiasts.
As the doors open to a world of literature, the excitement and potential for community engagement at The Book Attic is palpable. Residents are encouraged to pop in, say hello, and discover the heart of Richmond’s newest literary hub.
