New Leadership Takes Charge in West Arthur Shire Council

Helen Lubcke, Natalie O'Neill, Karen Harrington and Duncan South were elected onto the Shire of West Arthur council.

UPDATE: The West Arthur Shire has officially appointed a new council leadership team following a significant special meeting held on October 23, 2023. In a remarkable turn of events, all four vacant council roles were filled without a vote, showcasing the community’s support for their leaders.

Karen Harrington has been re-elected as the shire president, while Duncan South resumes his role as deputy president. Both incumbents will serve their second terms alongside newly sworn-in councillors Natalie O’Neill, a local cafe owner, and Helen Lubcke, a farmer. Their terms will last until October 20, 2029.

This unopposed election marks a significant moment for the Wheatbelt town, where the last competitive election occurred in 2013, when five candidates vied for four council positions. The absence of competition this year reflects a strong consensus among the electorate regarding their leadership.

During the meeting, the council also expressed gratitude to retiring councillors Robyn Lubcke and Adam Squires for their dedicated service. Their contributions were acknowledged as the council embarks on this new chapter, which includes the presence of former president Neil Morrell, who chose to step down.

The new council is expected to bring fresh perspectives and energy to local governance, as they take on critical issues affecting the community. Residents can anticipate updates as the newly appointed councillors begin their work, focusing on enhancing the quality of life in West Arthur.

The swift transition of leadership is a clear indication of community support and trust in their elected officials. As the council prepares to tackle upcoming challenges, residents are encouraged to stay engaged and informed about local developments.

Stay tuned for further updates on initiatives and plans from the West Arthur Shire Council as they step into their new roles.
