UPDATE: The Northern Rivers Rail Trail (NRRT) has just been awarded Gold in Tourist Attractions and Silver in Adventure Tourism at the 2025 NSW Tourism Awards. This recognition underscores the trail’s unique appeal as a premier destination for both leisure and adventure, following a significant ceremony held at Bicentennial Park in Sydney on November 27, 2025.
The accolades highlight the trail’s growing importance in the tourism sector, attracting visitors seeking diverse experiences. Dean Cooper, NRRT Regional Lead, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “Winning Gold in Tourist Attractions and Silver in Adventure Tourism shows how the Rail Trail is resonating with a wide range of visitors.” He noted that the trail caters to everyone, from casual day trippers to adventurous cyclists aiming for multi-day excursions.
This year, the NRRT team focused on enhancing visitor experiences through community-driven improvements. Upgrades to accessibility, new wayfinding tools, and engaging activities have made the trail more inclusive, allowing a broader audience to enjoy its offerings. The team also received commendations for their effective response to the challenges posed by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, ensuring safety and quick recovery for trail users.
“We’re proud to be part of a region that values connection to nature, to history, and to each other,” Cooper added. He credited the awards to the collective efforts of member councils, supporters, operators, and the hundreds of thousands of visitors who explore the trail each year.
In addition to the NRRT’s achievements, several other Northern Rivers operators were recognized at the NSW Tourism Awards, including Better By Bike, which won Gold in the Tourism Retail, Hire, and Services category.
These awards not only celebrate the trail’s impact on regional tourism but also underscore the importance of community engagement and resilience in enhancing the visitor experience. As the awards spotlight the Northern Rivers region, the trail’s recognition is expected to boost local tourism, drawing even more visitors eager to explore the scenic landscapes and rich history the area has to offer.
