Strong crowds have surged into Perth’s shopping districts as bargain hunters flock to the Karrinyup Shopping Centre and the CBD for urgent Boxing Day sales today, December 26, 2023. With doors opening at 8 AM, an estimated 100,000 shoppers are expected to descend on Karrinyup alone, according to general manager Trudy Cook.
By midday, the atmosphere was electric, with shoppers lining up outside popular stores, including Peter Alexander and Victoria’s Secret, as families and friends raced to snag deals. “We think this year we’re going to get close to nearly 100,000,” Cook stated, noting last year’s turnout of 85,000 shoppers.
Inside Karrinyup, Jobe Henderson, 19, and Remy Noack, 20, shared their experience of waiting over 30 minutes to check out at Peter Alexander. “It was crazy,” Noack exclaimed. The duo attributed the store’s popularity to viral TikTok trends and families eager for matching sleepwear sets, even for pets. “There were bumps and pushing among people trying to grab their things, but it was expected for a busy day like today,” Henderson recounted.
The excitement extended beyond Karrinyup, with DFO Perth also reporting significant foot traffic and congestion in surrounding streets. Traffic controllers were deployed to manage the influx, highlighting the day’s urgency.
Nationally, Australians are forecasted to spend around $1.6 billion on Boxing Day sales, with total spending expected to exceed $3.82 billion by the end of the year. Key categories driving sales include household goods at $476 million, clothing, shoes, and accessories at $216 million, and department stores at $123 million.
Retailers Association chief executive Chris Rodwell emphasized the enduring appeal of Boxing Day shopping. “Retailers are finishing the year on solid footing,” he stated. As consumers increasingly seek value, the Boxing Day shopping experience remains a highlight.
In the CBD, Federal Minister Patrick Gorman noted a slower start but expressed confidence in the day’s momentum. “I acknowledge that our economy is changing,” he said, reassuring that the CBD would fill up as the day progressed. He highlighted the importance of protecting retail workers’ penalty rates, impacting over 2.6 million Australians.
Research from PayPal revealed that 82 percent of Australians plan to shop online during this sales period, with fashion and accessories being the top purchases. “When people are shopping during busy sales periods, it’s understandable to be cautious,” stated PayPal consumer expert Danielle Grant. She urged online shoppers to stick to trusted sites to avoid scams.
As the day unfolds, shoppers are encouraged to seize the moment, with sales expected to continue throughout the week. “Get in very soon, because it does go very fast,” Cook advised.
With the excitement building and deals waiting to be snagged, Perth’s Boxing Day sales are not to be missed. Whether in-store or online, shoppers are preparing to make the most of this annual retail event.
