UPDATE: A 25-year-old driver from Perth has revealed that debilitating pain from a hernia led him to unintentionally accelerate to 104 km/h before crashing into a 17-year-old girl at a car meet, leaving her with serious injuries. The incident occurred during the Monday Meets event on July 14, 2023, in Burswood, and has raised questions about road safety at such gatherings.
Chun Lai Yuen, a student from Hong Kong, appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday to discuss the circumstances leading to the accident. Yuen claimed he was not participating in the event but was attempting to leave a nearby casino. His lawyer stated that he was caught in heavy traffic caused by the car enthusiast gathering when he experienced a sudden and intense hernia pain. “He panicked and accelerated,” the lawyer explained, emphasizing that Yuen did not see Caitlyn Dickson enter the road before the collision.
Witnesses reported a chaotic scene, with Caitlyn being flung nearly four meters into the air upon impact. Shocking court footage depicted the severity of the crash, occurring just before 10 PM in a 40 km/h zone. Prosecutors confirmed Yuen was traveling at 87 km/h at the moment of impact, having slammed on the brakes just before hitting Caitlyn.
Caitlyn sustained life-threatening injuries including a torn aorta, fractured pelvis, fractured elbow, and tears to her bladder and spleen. She attended the court proceedings, which were originally set for Yuen’s sentencing, now postponed to January 21, 2024.
Yuen faced charges of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm under aggravating circumstances. During the hearing, his lawyer revealed that Yuen had removed the SD card from his dashcam out of fear after receiving threats from onlookers at the scene. “He feared something might happen to him,” the defense stated, adding that the police may have dislodged the card during their search.
This incident highlights critical concerns surrounding safety at car meet events and the responsibilities of drivers in high-pressure situations. The court’s adjournment has left the community and Caitlyn’s family waiting anxiously for justice and accountability.
As Yuen awaits his new sentencing date, this case underscores the potential risks associated with large gatherings and the need for stricter safety measures to protect both participants and spectators alike. Further developments are expected as the court reconvenes in January, and the community continues to rally for change.
