UPDATE: Renowned polo champion Sinclair Hill AM OBE has tragically passed away at the age of 92 following an accident while mustering cattle at his Sky Farm property in Meroo Meadow, NSW. This heartbreaking news broke on Sunday, sending shockwaves through the international polo community.
Hill, who coached King Charles during his youth and significantly impacted the sport, was a towering figure in polo history. According to Jeremy Bayard, president of Polo NSW, Hill was “one of only two Australians to ever reach a 10-goal handicap,” the pinnacle of polo achievement, akin to golfing off scratch or better. “He was unmatched during his peak in the 1950s and 60s,” Bayard added.
Throughout his illustrious career, Hill showcased his skills on the global stage, representing Australia and the Commonwealth. His contributions to the sport earned him a place as an inaugural inductee in the Australian Polo Hall of Fame, and he was regarded as one of the sport’s immortals.
Hill’s legacy extends beyond the polo field; he was known for his vibrant personality and extensive network of friends, including political leaders, business moguls, and royalty. He was a close friend of the late Prince Philip, who personally invited him to coach a young Prince Charles. Their friendship blossomed, leading to Hill and his wife Wendy attending Charles’ wedding to Lady Diana in April 1981. Most recently, they reconnected during King Charles and Queen Camilla’s visit to Australia last year.
Bayard described Hill as “an enormous force of nature” and “the life of every party.” His passion for life was evident even at 92, as he continued to muster cattle—a testament to his character. “He gave it 100 percent every day, and he was doing that the day he died,” Bayard remarked.
In addition to his polo achievements, Hill had a successful agricultural career, owning several properties in NSW and Queensland. While he had recently reduced his cattle farming, he maintained a few at his Meroo Meadow property.
The news of Hill’s passing is a significant loss for the polo community and beyond. As tributes pour in, his remarkable influence on the sport and his enduring friendships will be remembered by many.
As the community mourns, more details are expected to emerge about Hill’s life and legacy. The impact of his passing resonates far beyond the polo field, reminding us of the connections and friendships that define our lives.
