Queensland Ministers Under Fire for Ignoring Forced Adoption Concerns

URGENT UPDATE: The Crisafulli government is facing fierce criticism for failing to address urgent concerns regarding forced adoptions in Queensland. Advocacy groups, including Jigsaw Queensland, have accused the state of “deflecting responsibility” after nearly two months of inaction since raising critical issues with state ministers.

Just last week, Jigsaw Queensland received a lackluster response from Families Minister Amanda Camm, who provided no substantial updates or commitments to restore access to vital information for adopted individuals seeking to reconnect with their families. Dr. Jo-Ann Sparrow, the president of Jigsaw Queensland, expressed her disappointment, stating, “It provides no meaningful update, no commitment to restoring access, and no timelines.”

The situation escalated following unexpected changes made in early September 2023 that severely restricted how families separated by historical child removal practices could access information. The new regulations now require written parental consent for adopted individuals to trace family names changed through marriage, marking what Dr. Sparrow describes as the most regressive policy shift in three decades.

Camm’s lack of action comes despite Jigsaw’s previous appeals to both her and Attorney-General Deb Frecklington. Frecklington acknowledged that the changes fell under Camm’s purview and were necessitated by a new legal interpretation, yet no meaningful dialogue has taken place since the initial outcry.

This matter is critically important as it directly impacts the lives of many adopted Queenslanders seeking to reunite with their birth families. “The government’s move has caused significant distress among those affected, and it is imperative that immediate steps are taken to rectify this situation,” Dr. Sparrow added.

As the community continues to voice outrage, advocates are urging the government to reconsider these changes and engage in dialogue with those affected. The growing dissatisfaction could lead to further protests and demands for accountability from state officials.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: As this situation develops, all eyes will be on the Crisafulli government to see if they will respond to the mounting pressure from advocacy groups. Expect advocacy efforts to intensify in the coming days as calls for change grow louder.

Stay tuned for more updates on this urgent issue affecting Queensland families.
