UPDATE: The Macedon Ranges Rockies suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the Basketball Victoria Country Basketball League grand final, losing to the Castlemaine Cannons 90-81 on Saturday night. After trailing by over 20 points in the third quarter, the Rockies mounted a fierce comeback that brought them within striking distance, but ultimately fell short.
The Cannons, aiming for a perfect season, established dominance early in the game, taking advantage of their size and experience. However, the Rockies displayed incredible resilience, narrowing the gap to just three points with less than three minutes remaining. Despite their efforts, Castlemaine regained control to secure the championship.
Coach Michael Ryan expressed pride in his team’s performance, stating, “We were rapt to still be competitive in the final quarter.” He acknowledged that while the team did not always adhere to their game plan, their determination shone through. “I’m really proud, but it hurts,” Ryan added.
The Rockies faced significant challenges, missing key players Lucas Carnell and Lucas Impey. Additionally, star player Saxon Royal exited the game early due to a kidney injury, further complicating their efforts against a formidable Cannons lineup. Ryan noted the impact of losing Royal, saying it forced the team to adapt quickly.
Emerging talent Finn McGinity provided a spark for the Rockies, but foul trouble plagued both McGinity and fellow big man Matthew Quinn, limiting their effectiveness. Ryan highlighted the pivotal third quarter, which the Rockies lost 28-15, as a decisive moment. “We could have adjusted earlier,” he reflected.
Guards Jacob Poyser and Jack Dohmen-Jolly were instrumental in the comeback, both finishing with impressive point totals of 20 and 21 respectively. Ryan commended the massive crowd for their unwavering support, noting that eight players have been with the program for five seasons.
This game was particularly significant for Tom Scott, as it marked his last appearance in the CBL, although he will continue to play in the Big V league. Ryan emphasized the importance of this moment for the team, mentioning their aspirations of “hanging a banner” in the future.
Looking ahead, Ryan confirmed the Rockies’ commitment to returning stronger next season, eager to compete for the championship once again. Meanwhile, Impey received recognition by being named to the north-west all-star five team, a testament to his talent and potential.
This thrilling match not only showcased the intensity of local basketball but also highlighted the emotional journey of the Rockies, leaving fans hopeful for what lies ahead. Stay tuned for more updates on the Rockies as they prepare for next season.
