UPDATE: In a thrilling finale, Tasmanian golfer Mat Goggin has claimed victory at the $150,000 NSW Senior Open held at Thurgoona Country Club Resort on July 15, 2023. With a stunning 325m drive on the 17th hole, Goggin surged from two shots down to secure his win, finishing the tournament at 13-under (203).
The 51-year-old golfer’s remarkable performance culminated in a one-shot victory over competitors Peter Lonard and Leon Trenerry, while last year’s champion, David McKenzie, trailed by another shot. Goggin’s final round of four-under 68 earned him the top prize of $26,970.
“Not bad for an old fella,” Goggin remarked after his win, highlighting his exceptional driving skills. “I drove the ball really well, and that’s the strength of my game.” This victory marks Goggin’s first since the 2015 Panama Claro Championship, celebrating a significant comeback in his career.
With temperatures soaring to the low 30s Celsius on the final day, Goggin faced a challenging start, initially trailing behind McKenzie, Lonard, and Trenerry. After a shaky moment on the par-five 11th where he faced a penalty drop, Goggin regrouped and showcased his exceptional talent. He faced a two-shot deficit when Trenerry chipped in for eagle on the par-five 14th, putting the pressure on Goggin.
However, Goggin’s pivotal drive on the 351m par-four 17th set him up for a crucial birdie, bringing him back into contention. Trenerry faltered, struggling to recover from the left-hand trees, while Goggin capitalized on his opportunity. With a solid putt from almost 3m, he secured the lead, forcing Trenerry to attempt a challenging uphill putt for a chance to tie.
“I pulled my drive down the left side, and when I saw the flag was back left, I knew I could get a flyer and chase one in there,” Goggin explained about his final approach shot. “It was a pretty good number for fly nine-iron, 150m, so I could take a free swing.”
Golf NSW CEO Stuart Fraser praised the event, noting the growing crowds at the 18th green. “The club and course have been unbelievable, and the feedback from the players is so positive,” he said. Thurgoona Country Club will continue to host the tournament for two more years.
As the golfing community celebrates Goggin’s impressive comeback, fans are left wondering what’s next for this veteran golfer who has demonstrated resilience and skill in the face of fierce competition.
Stay tuned for more updates on Goggin’s journey and upcoming tournaments as he aims to build on this thrilling victory!
