Thai PM Faces Criticism as Flood Death Toll Reaches 162

URGENT UPDATE: Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is facing intense scrutiny as the nation grapples with the aftermath of catastrophic flooding that has claimed at least 162 lives. The disaster has devastated the southern region, impacting over 1.4 million households and 3.8 million people across 12 provinces, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

The latest reports confirm that the death toll continues to rise, particularly in Songkhla province, where 126 deaths have been recorded. In a press conference held on October 14, 2023, government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat revealed that rescue operations are ongoing, with more bodies being recovered as access to previously submerged areas improves.

Prime Minister Charnvirakul acknowledged the government’s failures in managing the flood response. He stated, “I apologize to the people that the government was unable to take care and protect them.” This admission comes as widespread criticism mounts over the government’s handling of the crisis, prompting urgent calls for accountability.

In response to the devastation, Charnvirakul announced plans to distribute compensation payments to affected individuals starting next week. Video footage shows local residents returning to their homes to assess the damage, with personal belongings and furniture scattered across flooded interiors.

The flooding, which began last weekend, has caused significant disruptions, leaving thousands stranded and rendering streets impassable. The situation remains critical, with continued efforts to reach those in need.

In a gesture of support, King Maha Vajiralongkorn has pledged 100 million baht ($A4.8 million) to Hat Yai Hospital, which suffered extensive damage. The king also announced royal support for the funerals of all victims, highlighting the human impact of the disaster.

As water levels recede in the affected areas, officials are urging residents to remain cautious while assessing the situation. The government is under pressure to improve its disaster management protocols, facing inquiries into how such extensive flooding could lead to such a high casualty count.

Officials will continue to monitor recovery efforts closely and provide updates as the situation develops. The government’s next steps will be crucial in restoring trust and ensuring adequate support for those who have lost so much.
