UPDATE: Two teenagers have been charged following a dramatic police pursuit that unfolded in Sydney on Saturday night. The chase began around 9 PM when police attempted to stop an allegedly stolen Citroen in Blacktown.
The vehicle sped away, leading officers on a chase through multiple suburbs, ultimately ending in Leichhardt, approximately half an hour away. The situation escalated dramatically as the car allegedly crashed into a parked vehicle. In an attempt to apprehend the driver, an officer discharged their firearm, while another officer deployed a Taser.
During the chaotic scene, a 27-year-old officer suffered a minor head injury when he was reportedly struck by the car’s door. Fortunately, police confirmed late on Sunday that he has since been discharged from the hospital.
Witnesses recounted the terrifying moments of the pursuit. One bystander noted, “(Police) were shooting at the car. I shut the door, and then I saw the car—I felt like it was reversing back really fast… I knew it was gunfire.”
The driver managed to escape a dead-end street by crashing into two parked cars and ramming three police vehicles before fleeing onto the footpath. The abandoned vehicle was later discovered on nearby Crystal St, Petersham.
On Sunday afternoon, police successfully arrested a 17-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl. The boy faces 10 offences, including predatory driving and assaulting a police officer without actual bodily harm. The girl has been charged with being carried in a conveyance taken without consent and breaching bail conditions. Both have been refused bail and are set to appear before a Children’s Court on Monday.
Local residents expressed shock at the ability of the teenagers to evade capture in such a tight area. One resident remarked, “It’s amazing that the car they were pursuing got away, given it is a dead-end street. I think they were probably even surprised.”
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with additional information or footage of the incident to come forward. This gripping event has left the community shaken and highlights ongoing concerns about youth crime and police response in urban areas.
