UPDATE: A heartfelt Unity Farbrengen took place in Sydney on December 15, 2023, uniting the Jewish community in the wake of the devastating Bondi Beach terror attack that claimed 15 lives just a day earlier. Organized by Chabad Youth NSW and hosted at Chabad of Bondi, the event aimed to provide comfort and strength during this traumatic period.
Rabbi Pinchus Feldman, a prominent figure in the community since 1968, emphasized the urgent need for a more personal gathering. “We needed this intimate setting to allow our community to connect deeply,” he stated. The Farbrengen offered a stark contrast to the massive Chanukah celebration that attracted over 20,000 participants, focusing instead on the healing power of unity and reflection.
The evening began with solemn Chabad nigunim, led by notable chazanim including Rabbi Menachem Feldman and Rabbi Chaim Koncepolski, setting an emotional tone. Joined by Rabbi Yehuda Niasoff and Rabbi Noach Koncepolski, their melodies fostered a profound sense of connection among attendees.
A poignant video featuring the Lubavitcher Rebbe from the 1970s was also presented, touching on the incomprehensibility of tragedy. The Rebbe’s message highlighted the eternal nature of the soul, stating, “Our connection to the Divine spark endures beyond this moment.”
Rabbi Feldman further urged the community to support one another with chizuk and encouragement, reinforcing the essential theme of togetherness in facing adversity. Words of comfort were shared by Rabbi Chaim Tzvi Groner from Melbourne and Rabbi Yoram Ulman, who emphasized resilience in the face of recent events.
The gathering featured a powerful address from Rabbi Mendel Lipskar, head Chabad shliach to South Africa, who traveled to Sydney specifically to offer inspiration and support. “The strength of our people lies in our faith and unity,” he passionately expressed, igniting hope among attendees.
The evening concluded with Rabbi Nochum Schapiro, president of the Rabbinical Association of Australasia, urging participants to bring menorahs into their workplaces to spread light and Jewish pride. “Now is the time to share our light with the world,” he declared.
This Unity Farbrengen was dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Bondi Beach attack and aimed to uplift those affected, fostering a spirit of resilience and solidarity within the community. As the Jewish community continues to heal, the impact of this gathering resonates deeply, reminding all of the strength found in unity during trying times.
Stay tuned for further updates as the community comes together in support and remembrance during this crucial period.
