Urgent Call for Traffic Lights at Tarneit Accident Hotspot

UPDATE: Local resident Aijaz Moinuddin is urgently demanding that the Wyndham Council take immediate action to install traffic lights at a notorious accident hotspot in Tarneit. With an alarming increase in traffic and a rise in accidents, Moinuddin emphasizes that the intersection has become perilous, particularly during peak hours.

In recent years, this intersection has transformed into a common detour for motorists looking to bypass the heavily congested Leakes Road. Moinuddin states that the current design is ill-equipped to handle the surge in vehicles: “Rapid housing growth in the surrounding areas and the absence of proper traffic lights make it extremely difficult for drivers to safely cross or merge,” he said.

The situation is dire, as Moinuddin noted that the wooden barriers near Davis Creek have been damaged multiple times due to collisions, exemplifying the unsafe conditions. “It is a common sight to see pieces of broken bumpers and lights,” he added. The lack of traffic lights has led to chaotic driving behavior, with drivers frequently risking their safety when merging or crossing.

Moreover, Moinuddin highlighted the risks faced by pedestrians, as a bus stop is situated adjacent to the intersection. “Traffic lights would slow vehicles, reduce confusion, and provide a safe window for both drivers and pedestrians, ultimately preventing serious accidents,” he urged.

Moinuddin expressed his frustration after raising the issue with the council following yet another accident at this location. He was disheartened to learn that while an upgrade is planned, there is currently no timeline or budget allocated for implementation. “This is concerning given the growing traffic and frequent accidents in the area. The intersection needs to be treated as a safety priority, not something that can be delayed,” he stated.

A spokesperson for Wyndham City responded, saying, “The council encourages everyone to obey Victorian Road Rules and currently has no plans to install lights.” They added that future signalization would depend on growth and traffic volumes, subject to budget approval from the council.

As concerned residents like Moinuddin continue to advocate for change, the call for immediate action at this dangerous intersection grows louder. With the safety of both drivers and pedestrians at stake, this matter remains urgent and demands swift attention from local authorities.

Residents are urged to stay vigilant and report any incidents while continuing to advocate for necessary changes to enhance safety at this critical junction.
