Urgent: Police Investigate Deliberate Fire in Bendigo Street

URGENT UPDATE: Police in Bendigo are investigating a fire suspected to be deliberately lit in the Kennington area. The incident occurred around 1:20 PM on December 7, prompting immediate action from firefighters and local authorities.

According to Sergeant Mick McCrann of the Bendigo Police, the fire was reported near a creek on Bramley Close. “We believe young people may have ignited the fire and left the area,” he stated. Fortunately, there have been no injuries or property damage reported as a result of the blaze.

The situation escalated quickly, with VicEmergency declaring the fire safe by 1:57 PM. As part of their response, police secured traffic management points and deployed a police aircraft to monitor the area.

Sergeant McCrann warned about the potential risks of wildfires as the region approaches a challenging fire season. “A big fire season is coming up—the last thing we need is deliberately lit fires,” he emphasized. He highlighted the recent rainfall but cautioned that conditions are likely to worsen in the coming months.

Authorities are actively seeking witnesses and any CCTV footage that could provide insights into the fire’s origins. Anyone with information is urged to contact Bendigo Police as the investigation continues.

This incident underscores the heightened vigilance required as the community prepares for a potentially severe fire season. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.
