UPDATE: A significant rise in power bills is imminent for Western Australians as the Federal Government’s energy rebate program is set to end in 2024. New survey data reveals that over 60% of Australians have already started adjusting their energy usage in anticipation of this financial shock.
Research conducted by Samsung Australia in collaboration with PureProfile shows that nearly half of Western Australians are now only using air conditioning in short bursts, while 75% of participants expressed a desire for better energy-saving solutions for major appliances. The study surveyed 1,040 Australians and highlighted a growing trend of energy-conscious behavior across the region.
With the rebate’s expiration, households can expect their power bills to rise by an average of $300 annually. This looming increase has already started impacting families like that of Margriet and Daniel Young from Subiaco. The couple reported their winter electricity bills skyrocketed from $300 with the rebate to nearly $600 without it.
Mr. Young stated, “The rebates had been making a huge difference on some of our bills. There were only one or two bills without a rebate, and I noticed the expense immediately.” With a newborn at home, the Youngs find it challenging to cut back on essential heating and cooling. To cope with rising temperatures, they have opted to spend time at their parents’ house, which is equipped with solar panels.
As the energy landscape becomes increasingly challenging, the Youngs are contemplating energy-efficient upgrades for their future home. “We’re moving soon to our own house, and we’ve been discussing adding solar panels and insulation,” Ms. Young said. Mr. Young added, “We’ll have to be smarter with our energy usage, especially since high prices seem here to stay.”
This urgent situation has left many Western Australians feeling the financial pressure as they adapt to rising energy costs. The imminent end of the rebate program underscores the necessity for families to strategize on energy consumption and explore alternative solutions.
As the deadline approaches, residents are urged to stay informed and consider options for energy efficiency, as the Federal Government’s decision could significantly impact household budgets across the state. Monitor this developing situation closely as families brace for the upcoming changes.
