Urgent Toy Drive Launches to Brighten Kids’ Christmas

UPDATE: The Albury Police Department has just launched its annual Christmas toy drive, calling on the community to donate gifts for children in the hospital this festive season. The initiative aims to deliver smiles to young patients at Albury Wodonga Health, with donations expected to reach up to 800 presents by December 4.

Police and army personnel are teaming up once again to make this seasonal effort a reality. Detective Acting Inspector Troy Martin emphasized the importance of this cause, stating, “To get a present, to put a smile on a child’s face is just amazing.” The initiative, which started in 2021, has gained momentum, with support from local businesses and community members.

This year, the police are encouraging everyone to contribute. Gifts typically range from $20 to $30, including items like basketballs and soft toys. Samantha Peet, Nurse Unit Manager of Pediatrics, underscored the positive impact these donations have: “It gives the kids that unfortunately end up in hospital at Christmas time a small gift so they can make a really challenging time just that little bit more fun.”

As the festive season approaches, donations can be dropped off at both the Albury and Wodonga Police Stations. The initiative not only brings joy to the children but also offers a chance for donors to engage with local law enforcement, with opportunities for photos at the police station.

Acting Senior Sergeant Justin Foots urged the community to remember those facing difficulties, especially children spending Christmas in the hospital. “It’s a good chance to think of those in a worse-off situation than ourselves,” Foots said. “If we can put our mind towards those who are struggling and do something to put a smile on the kids’ faces, we’re all for it.”

This heartfelt appeal has garnered recognition for Detective Acting Inspector Martin, who was recently nominated for a Rotary award for his charity work, which includes this Christmas fundraiser. With the deadline approaching, the urgency to act is clear—help bring joy to those who need it most this holiday season.

For those wishing to contribute, the police invite donations and highlight the opportunity for connection within the community. Join the cause and help make a difference today!
