A tragic incident unfolded at Crescent Head today as a man drowned after being pulled from the water, despite valiant efforts from two young lifesavers. This urgent situation arose around 3:30 PM on November 28, when Surf Life Saving NSW received multiple alerts about a swimmer in distress at Point Plomer.
Authorities mobilized the Kempsey-Crescent Head SLSC Emergency Callout Team and notified local lifeguards, while coordinating with emergency services to rush a defibrillator to the scene. Bystanders retrieved the unconscious man from the water and initiated resuscitation efforts.
Two teenage lifesavers from Bondi, on their way to schoolies celebrations, heard the desperate calls for help and sprang into action. They performed CPR for approximately 30 minutes, but sadly, their efforts were in vain. The man could not be revived, marking a heartbreaking end to the rescue attempt.
In the wake of this traumatic event, Surf Life Saving NSW has implemented wellbeing measures for the young lifesavers involved. The Mid North Coast Police District has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragedy, with a report set to be prepared for the coroner.
As temperatures are expected to soar over the weekend, Surf Life Saving NSW CEO Steve Pearce issued a vital reminder to beachgoers: “This is a terrible tragedy as we head into summer. Our condolences go to the man’s family, and we extend our support to the two young lifesavers involved in the resuscitation.” He emphasized the importance of beach safety, urging everyone to swim only at patrolled locations marked by red and yellow flags.
This incident highlights an alarming trend, as the coastal drowning toll in New South Wales has now reached 15 since July 1. With the holiday season approaching, authorities are stressing the need for vigilance and education on recognizing rip currents and safe swimming practices.
As emergency services continue their investigation, community members are left grappling with the aftermath of this heartbreaking loss. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
