URGENT UPDATE: As summer 2023 kicks off, beach safety experts are sounding the alarm on the dangers of rip currents along Australia’s coastlines. Just this month, Professor Rob Brander, known as Dr Rip, highlighted critical signs every beachgoer must recognize to stay safe.
In a recent episode of his podcast, ‘Life’s a Beach’, Dr Rip explained that seemingly calm waters can hide powerful rip currents, which are responsible for the majority of coastal rescues each year. “The rip is channelized and is flowing out through the big, wide dark gap between breaking waves,” he warned, urging swimmers to be vigilant.
With thousands of locals and tourists expected at Shoalhaven beaches this season, recognizing the warning signs of a rip current is more crucial than ever. Rips can form rapidly, especially in areas with strong wave action, flowing through deeper channels between sandbanks.
Dr Rip outlined the most reliable indicators to spot a rip from the shore:
– **A calm patch between breaking waves:** This may appear safe but could indicate a dangerous rip.
– **Darker or deeper-looking water:** Rips create channels that make the water appear darker than surrounding areas.
– **Foam or sand moving offshore:** Watch for seaweed, bubbles, or discolored water streaming away from the beach.
– **A rough or rippled surface:** Choppy water contrasting with calmer areas is often a sign of a rip current.
Dr Rip emphasized that these currents can be deceptive, often fooling even experienced swimmers. If caught in a rip, he advises, “Remain calm, allow yourself to float, and raise an arm for help. Don’t swim directly against the current; instead, move parallel to the beach to escape the channel.”
Steve Jones from Surf Life Saving South Coast echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of swimming between the red and yellow flags. “Flagged areas are chosen daily by trained lifeguards who assess conditions,” he stated.
With the summer season upon us, the risk of rips is heightened, particularly in unpatrolled areas. Authorities are urging beachgoers to educate themselves on these critical safety measures to prevent accidents and ensure a safe beach experience.
As beach enthusiasts head to the coast, it’s clear that understanding how to spot and react to rip currents could save lives. Don’t become a statistic—stay informed, stay safe, and share this vital information with fellow beachgoers.
