WA Government Launches $1 Million Ad Blitz for GST Fairness

Premier Roger Cook speaks to the media at WA Museum Boola Bardip on Friday to announce the new Terracotta Warriors exhibition.

UPDATE: The Western Australia (WA) Government has just announced a bold $1 million advertising campaign aimed at promoting the importance of WA’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) deal. This urgent initiative, targeting audiences on the east coast, underscores the state’s commitment to ensuring a fair share of GST revenue for its citizens.

The campaign comes amidst public assurances from Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers that there will be no changes to WA’s GST arrangements. However, with the current deal set to last until 2029-30, the WA Government feels it is crucial to communicate the deal’s significance to counter east coast skepticism.

WA’s GST share has historically been low, even plunging below 30¢ per dollar during economic downturns. This situation prompted a lengthy renegotiation with the Commonwealth, first initiated by former Premier Colin Barnett in 2011. Premier Roger Cook stated, “The bottom line is that WA’s GST is working for Australia, and my Government is calling on business leaders and the community to come together as Team WA to help keep the share fair.”

As the Productivity Commission reviews the current GST framework, a report is expected by the end of next year. This examination is critical, as it seeks to ensure that the system remains effective for funding essential services like schools and hospitals across the nation. Chalmers has insisted that the Federal Labor government is a “big, enthusiastic backer” of WA and has reiterated that there will be no changes to the GST deal.

However, the future remains uncertain. Questions linger about whether such commitments will hold beyond Chalmers’ tenure as Treasurer or Anthony Albanese’s time as Prime Minister. This uncertainty has fueled WA’s proactive campaign, emphasizing that what benefits WA also benefits the entire country.

Treasurer Rita Saffioti did not mince words, declaring, “The gloves are off to defend WA’s fair share of the GST and we’re making it clear to those east coast whingers what they’re risking by trying to tear it down.” The campaign will feature advertisements in major east coast newspapers and billboards in key cities, aiming to capture the attention of both the public and politicians.

WA’s robust economy and budget surplus have made it a tempting target for criticism from other states. The state is urging all Australians to recognize the importance of equitable GST distribution, especially as it continues to experience leading population growth and economic prosperity.

The urgency of this message cannot be overstated. As the WA Government pushes forward with its advertising blitz, it hopes to rally support and awareness around the critical issue of GST fairness. If the message resonates, it could significantly impact WA’s financial future and ensure that its citizens receive the fair share they deserve.

In conclusion, the WA Government’s $1 million ad campaign is not just an expense; it’s a necessary investment in the state’s future. The outcome of these efforts will be closely watched as the Productivity Commission’s findings loom and federal commitments are tested. West Australians and the broader Australian community are encouraged to pay attention to this vital issue, as its ramifications will affect millions.
