Werribee Bees Claim Victory Over Keilor in Thrilling Opener

UPDATE: The Werribee Bees secured a thrilling victory over the Keilor Bulls in the opening round of the Bowls Victoria weekend pennant, division 2, section 1 competition on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Chirnside Park. This win marks a significant moment for the Bees, who have sought revenge after the Bulls ended their championship hopes last season.

Werribee triumphed with an overall score of 80 (14)-67 (4), showcasing remarkable teamwork despite offseason changes. The Bees’ success was highlighted by Gavin Joyce‘s rink winning 14-10 and Robert Panton‘s commanding 32-18 victory. In contrast, Robert Smith‘s rink fell short at 19-16 and Ian Milledge‘s rink lost 20-18.

Joyce, a director for the Bees, expressed confidence in the team’s strength ahead of the season opener. He acknowledged the departure of key players such as Mick O’Neill and Brendan Barker, who have moved to Altona to compete in the premier division. “Despite some personnel changes, we aim to remain competitive and are focused on winning promotions and championships,” Joyce stated.

The Bees are fielding five teams in the weekend pennant and five midweek sides this season, showing their commitment to fostering talent among newer bowlers while leveraging the experience of established players. Joyce emphasized the importance of player development for their success in the 2025-26 season.

In other league action, the Hoppers made a triumphant return to division 3, section 1, after winning a division 4 premiership last season. They defeated Bacchus Marsh 2 with a decisive score of 88 (18)-63 (0), with Albert Wu‘s rink securing a standout 27-13 win.

Additionally, in division 4, section 1, Point Cook emerged victorious against Williamstown 2, finishing with an 81 (16)-67 (2) score. Brian Turner‘s rink led the charge with a notable 26-10 win.
