Werribee Tigers Claim First Victory of Season in Dominant Style

UPDATE: The Werribee Tigers have clinched their first victory of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west season in a commanding performance against Donvale on Saturday, October 7, 2023. After struggling in the first two matches, the Tigers showcased their strength at home, setting a strong precedent for the remainder of the season.

In a one-day match at Chirnside Park, Werribee won the toss and chose to bat first, posting an impressive total of 4-258 from 45 overs. Every batter contributed, with Nathan Taylor leading the charge, scoring a remarkable 63 runs. Coach Brad Robertson expressed relief and excitement in securing this pivotal win, stating, “It was important but it wasn’t like we were panicking.”

The Tigers’ confidence was palpable as they transitioned to their bowling innings, demolishing Donvale for just 59 runs in the 25th over. Pitching in with a stellar performance, Mitchell Cullen took 5 wickets for 14 runs, earning praise from Robertson for his hard work paying off. “It was good for Mitch to get some reward for the hard work,” he noted, adding that Matthew Watt also impressed with two early wickets.

With this victory, Werribee moves into their next challenge against Mt Waverley this coming Saturday. Robertson remains optimistic, emphasizing that the team is beginning to settle and perform consistently.

Meanwhile, in another exciting match, Hoppers Crossing secured a win against Endeavour Hills, bowling them out for 162. Key players Sai Surapaneni and Abbas Faiyaz each took three wickets, paving the way for a successful chase. Bibek Virk shone with the bat, scoring 88 runs off just 73 balls, as Hoppers Crossing finished at 3-166 in the 27th over.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on the Werribee Tigers and Hoppers Crossing as they aim to build on their recent successes.
