UPDATE: In a decisive local government election, the Shire of Wickepin has re-elected three councillors and introduced a fresh face to the council. With 53.6% of eligible voters participating, the election saw a significant turnout, with 275 ballots cast from 513 registered electors.
Darryl Gaull emerged as the standout candidate, securing a spot on the council with 88 first-preference votes. Incumbent councillor Lindsay Corke followed closely, receiving 72 votes, while fellow incumbents Wes Astbury and Tyron Miller secured third and fourth places with 61 and 43 votes, respectively. Notably, incumbent Peter Thompson lost his seat, paving the way for new leadership.
The election results reflect a robust engagement from the community, underscoring the importance of local governance. In a statement on their website, the shire expressed gratitude to Cr Thompson for his service, highlighting that his “dedication to the Shire of Wickepin does not go unnoticed.”
The newly elected councillors were sworn in during a meeting held on October 20, 2023, joining continuing members Julie Russell, John Mearns, and Fran Allan. Cr Russell was re-elected as shire president without opposition after Cr Astbury declined a nomination, and Cr Allan nominated Cr Miller as deputy president.
