Musk Compares EU to Nazis as X Deletes Commission’s Ad Account

Social media platform X has terminated the advertising account of the European Commission after owner Elon Musk made controversial comparisons likening the European Union to Nazi Germany. In a reply to the Commission’s announcement of a $140 million fine for breaching transparency rules, X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, stated, “Your ad account has been terminated.”

The Commission had previously announced the fine on July 7, 2023, accusing X of misleading users regarding account authenticity, particularly through the use of blue verification ticks. Despite the account’s termination, the European Commission’s X account and its posts remain accessible to users.

Musk’s remarks escalated tensions between the tech billionaire and the EU, which he described as a “tyrannical, unelected bureaucracy oppressing the people of Europe.” He further amplified his position by sharing a user’s comment characterizing the EU as “The Fourth Reich,” alongside an image depicting the EU flag with a Nazi emblem beneath it.

The European Commission’s actions against X were prompted by its findings that the platform withheld data from researchers and did not transparently document advertisements. The Commission asserted that the imposed fine was proportionate to the violations identified.

In response to the penalties, Musk called for the dissolution of the EU, framing the fine as an infringement on the rights of technology platforms and the freedom of expression. His comments also drew criticism from prominent political figures, including Marco Rubio, the United States Secretary of State, who labelled the fine as “an attack on all American tech platforms and the American people.”

The ongoing friction highlights the broader regulatory challenges tech platforms face within the EU, as authorities tighten their grip on online transparency and user safety. Musk’s provocative statements and the subsequent termination of the EU’s advertising account mark a significant moment in the evolving relationship between technology companies and regulatory bodies.

As the situation develops, observers will be watching closely for further reactions from both Musk and the European Commission regarding the implications of this incident for future engagements.
