Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani has been elected as the new mayor of New York City, pledging transformative changes aimed at addressing economic inequality. Additionally, he aims to eliminate public bus fares, suggesting that making buses “fast and free” could come at an annual cost of around $630 million. However, estimates from the head of the New York transport authority indicate the actual figure may be closer to $1 billion.
Creating Accessible Food Options and Corporate Tax Reforms
Mamdani has proposed establishing a network of five city-owned grocery stores across New York’s five boroughs to combat soaring food prices. He believes these stores could provide lower prices without a profit motive. To finance his initiatives, Mamdani plans to raise the corporate tax rate from 7.25 percent to 11.5 percent, aligning it with New Jersey’s highest rate.
