Mobile Lung Health Clinic Launches Urgent Checks for MIA Workers

URGENT UPDATE: A mobile health clinic dedicated to lung health is set to launch in Griffith from August 25 to 29, 2023, targeting workers at risk of serious ‘dust diseases’ such as asbestosis, silicosis, and mesothelioma. This initiative, spearheaded by Icare, aims to provide timely screenings for individuals in high-risk occupations including mining, construction, and manufacturing.

The clinic will utilize cutting-edge x-ray technology and spirometry tools to conduct lung function tests and chest x-rays, all within a rapid 30-minute checkup. Although appointments are currently fully booked, Icare encourages workers and companies in affected industries to reach out for potential openings and future screenings.

Minister for Work Health and Safety Sophie Cotsis hailed the mobile clinic as a significant step in enhancing healthcare access for vulnerable workers. “Along with enforcement of the recent ban on engineered stone, the new Mobile Clinic demonstrates our commitment to improve outcomes for workers exposed to hazardous dust across NSW,” she stated.

Sarah Johnson, Icare Group Executive of General Insurance and Care, emphasized the importance of early detection. “Early detection is critical to effective treatment, and we’re here to make sure every worker, no matter where they live, has access to world-class care.”

The clinic’s advanced digital monitoring systems and backup power ensure it operates effectively, even in remote areas. Each screening may also include referrals for additional CT scans if deemed necessary, making it a vital resource for early identification of lung health issues.

Individuals seeking lung screenings can contact the Lung Screening Service via their website or call 1800 550 027. For businesses and organizations, the Dust Diseases Care team is available for inquiries and support.

This initiative not only highlights the ongoing commitment to worker health but also reflects a broader movement towards improving occupational safety standards in Australia. As the mobile clinic prepares to hit the road, it represents a crucial development for workers in high-risk environments.
