Coaches Predict Connor Newnham Could Make Barton Medal History

UPDATE: Coaches are buzzing about Kiewa-Sandy Creek star Connor Newnham as he gears up for a historic shot at the Barton Medal on Monday night. In an unexpected twist, a forward could potentially upstage the league’s elite midfielders, challenging a long-standing tradition in the TDFL.

Historically, forwards have struggled to claim the league’s top individual honor, with the Barton Medal’s honor board primarily showcasing midfielders and rucks. However, polling data from The Border Mail indicates that out of 11 coaches surveyed, six believe Newnham will either win the prestigious medal or finish as the runner-up. This surge in support underscores Newnham’s exceptional performance this season, marking the best form of his career.

Under the guidance of coach Zac Fulford, Newnham has not only captured the Hawks’ best and fairest award last year but is also a frontrunner to achieve this feat again. He has made headlines with an impressive tally of 98 goals, narrowly missing the century during the home-and-away season. Coaches are confident that Newnham’s stellar contributions make him a strong contender for the medal.

Last year, Newnham polled 15 votes, finishing equal third alongside notable players like Cam Fendyk, Zack Leitch, and Jarrad Farwell, who all received 22 votes in a thrilling three-way tie. This year, with a remarkable improvement from his previous season’s total of 56 goals, Newnham is poised for a significant leap in recognition.

If Newnham doesn’t clinch the medal, coaches are eyeing Dylan Van Berlo, co-coach of Rutherglen, and teammate Marty Brennan as potential winners. Van Berlo, who was the favorite last year, also finished with 15 votes. His consistent performance this season, coupled with the Cats’ improved match outcomes, positions him as a formidable candidate.

Brennan, a highly sought-after signing in the off-season, has lived up to expectations, consistently appearing in the Cats’ best players list in 16 out of 17 matches. His standout performances are sure to have caught the attention of the umpires.

Another strong contender is Tyson Neander from Thurgoona. Despite a suspension last season that kept him from competing for the medal, Neander is anticipated to be a leading candidate again. Although the Bulldogs have won fewer matches this season, his talent remains undeniable. His teammate, Linc Hardy, is also emerging as a surprise contender, showcasing athleticism and skill in the ruck that could sway umpire votes.

Coaches are also predicting strong performances from players like Elliott Powell, Ben Mason, Cam Fendyk, Tom Cartledge, Jarrad Farwell, Zack Leitch, Brad Hibberson, and Mitch Hemming in the upcoming tally.

As excitement builds ahead of the Barton Medal count on July 17, 2023, the spotlight is firmly on Newnham, as he stands on the brink of potentially rewriting history in the TDFL. Fans and players alike are gearing up for what promises to be an electrifying night. Keep an eye on the developments as the countdown to the ceremony continues!
