Wayne Bennett’s Witty Insights After Souths’ 40-0 Victory

Wayne Bennett brought his trademark humor to a press conference following the South Sydney Rabbitohs’ impressive 40-0 victory over the St. George Illawarra Dragons. The win marked a significant milestone for the team as they continue their push towards the end of the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership season.

During the press conference, Bennett discussed the potential for Alex Johnston to break the long-standing record of 212 tries set by Ken Irvine. Johnston is now just three tries away from this remarkable achievement. Despite the excitement surrounding the record, Bennett expressed a more laid-back attitude. “I don’t know what you’re making such a fuss about,” he stated. “It’s there, it’s not broken. The day it is, it’ll be a great moment, but no one can predict when that will happen.”

Bennett acknowledged that Johnston was fortunate to score his 210th try, which came from a pass that many considered forward but was not called by the referee. “I don’t think the ref was game to take it off him, to be honest with you,” Bennett remarked, adding that the pass was “marginal.”

Team Dynamics and Upcoming Challenges

South Sydney captain Cody Walker expressed his enthusiasm about the prospect of Johnston breaking the record. “It’s history making. Just to be a part of it… I couldn’t imagine what he’s going through,” Walker said. He speculated on the possibility of Johnston achieving a hat trick in their upcoming match against the Sydney Roosters, acknowledging it would be a significant moment for the club.

Bennett humorously interjected, reminding Walker that he could potentially be on the bench during that game. Walker quickly responded, “I’ll still run on,” highlighting their banter and the camaraderie within the team.

Bennett also noted the impact of injuries on the team’s performance this season, mentioning that key players like Walker had been missed. “There are about seven Codys that aren’t playing for us… when they come out, they do bring that excellence,” he said. Despite the challenges, Bennett expressed pride in the efforts of the remaining players who have stepped up to fill the gaps.

Looking ahead, Bennett hinted at potential selection dilemmas for their final match of the season. “I might have to make some decisions about team selection. I haven’t had to do that,” he commented, referring to Walker’s return from injury and the ongoing evaluation of player fitness as they approach the end of the season.

In concluding remarks filled with humor, Bennett reflected on the team’s performance and their momentum heading into Round 27. “We’ve got four straight wins already,” he joked, referencing their bye week and the narrative surrounding their season. He emphasized the need for patience and resilience, saying, “You had us winning the wooden spoon two weeks ago, so just give us a break.”

As the Rabbitohs prepare for their next challenge against the Roosters, the excitement around Johnston’s record continues to build, setting the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating finish to the 2025 season.
