Urgent Update: $7.2M Illicit Tobacco Seized, Two Arrested

BREAKING: Authorities have just announced a massive seizure of illicit tobacco valued at over $7.2 million, leading to the arrest of two men linked to an organized crime syndicate. This urgent operation, conducted by Victoria Police’s Criminal Proceeds Squad and Taskforce Lunar, took place on August 21, 2023, in homes located in Dallas and Campbellfield, as well as a business in Epping.

In a significant blow to criminal operations, police seized $1.9 million worth of illicit tobacco, approximately $80,000 in cash, six luxury watches valued at more than $119,000, and various electronic devices. A 40-year-old man from Dallas is expected to face charges related to possessing a commercial quantity of illicit tobacco and knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime.

In a related operation, a 34-year-old Campbellfield man was arrested after police intercepted a truck in Laverton North, carrying over four million cigarettes worth an estimated $5 million. An additional $100,000 in cash was confiscated from his residence.

Detective Inspector Graham Banks from Taskforce Lunar emphasized the severe implications of such illicit activities, stating, “This offending consistently goes hand in hand with other serious and violent crime… regardless of what form that criminality takes place, it will be targeted by police.”

These operations are part of a larger investigation into a syndicate accused of laundering more than $83 million in illicit profits through local businesses since May 2021. The investigations remain ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

This urgent update highlights the ongoing battle against organized crime and the significant efforts by law enforcement to dismantle these networks. The seizure not only disrupts illicit operations but also underscores the serious societal impacts of such criminal activities, as they often correlate with other forms of violence and crime.

Stay tuned for further developments on this breaking story as police continue their investigations and work to bring those responsible to justice.
