A railway bridge under construction in northwest China’s Qinghai province collapsed early on March 15, 2024, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 workers, with four others still missing. The incident occurred around 03:00 local time when a steel cable snapped during a tensioning operation. According to state media reports from the Xinhua News Agency, the collapse left a significant gap in the bridge’s curved aquamarine arch, causing part of the deck to hang precariously over the Yellow River.
The bridge, which spans 1.6 kilometers and stands 55 metres above the river’s surface, was in a critical phase of construction when the tragedy occurred.
