Saints Cut Veteran RB Cam Akers in Roster Reshuffle

The New Orleans Saints have released veteran running back Cam Akers, as announced on August 28, 2023. Akers, who was signed in June, has been competing for a backup position behind star player Alvin Kamara. This move is part of a broader roster adjustment, with the Saints making 14 transactions ahead of the NFL’s cut deadline.

Akers expressed his feelings about the situation on social media platform X, commenting, “NFL a crazy place,” alongside a crying face emoji. The decision to let him go comes as the Saints aim to finalize their 53-man roster, with coach Kellen Moore indicating that the team’s depth in the running back position influenced the decision.

Analysis of the Saints’ Roster Decisions

Coach Moore acknowledged Akers’ talent, stating, “Difficult one, because he’s a really good running back in this league. He can contribute for us.” However, he noted that Kendre Miller had performed exceptionally well, alongside other players who could fulfill necessary roles on the team.

Akers began his professional career with the Los Angeles Rams and has also played for the Houston Texans and the Minnesota Vikings. Last season, the Texans traded him to the Vikings, where he played in 12 games, rushing for 297 yards on 64 carries and scoring one touchdown. Akers also had a productive receiving season, catching 10 passes for 52 yards and two touchdowns.

The Saints’ decision reflects their confidence in their current running back lineup, which includes Kamara, Miller, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Devin Neal, Marcus Yarns, and Velus Jones Jr.. With the roster still needing finalization, the team appears to be prioritizing players who can make a significant impact moving forward.

As the NFL season approaches, the Saints will look to solidify their roster and enhance their competitiveness. The release of Akers marks a pivotal moment in their preparations, demonstrating the high-stakes nature of professional football and the constant evaluation of player performance.
