Urgent Update: Two Police Officers Shot in Porepunkah, Lockdown Imposed

URGENT UPDATE: Two police officers have reportedly been shot in a violent incident in Porepunkah, a small town approximately 300 km northeast of Melbourne. The situation remains active, with the perpetrator still at large, prompting immediate concerns for public safety.

As the investigation continues, Porepunkah Primary School has gone into lockdown, ensuring the safety of its 104 students. Principal Jill Gillies confirmed that the lockdown began around 11:30 AM, stating that students were kept calm and engaged with activities during the emergency. “We were told that there was a situation unfolding,” she remarked in an interview, highlighting the school’s preparedness for such incidents.

Police have urged the community to stay clear of the area, which is home to around 1,000 residents and known for its picturesque vineyards. Witnesses reported seeing multiple police vehicles responding to the scene as the situation developed. “This is still an active incident, and we will provide more information when it’s operationally safe to do so,” confirmed a spokesperson for Victoria Police.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his thoughts for the police officers involved, acknowledging the risks they face daily. He stated, “The men and women who wear our uniform take risks each and every day.” His comments reflect the national concern for the safety of law enforcement personnel in light of this alarming event.

Additionally, Australian Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw extended his support to Victoria Police, stating, “We hope that they are all safe and well,” while also expressing deep concerns for the officers involved.
