Experience Luxury on Japan’s Twilight Express Mizukaze Train

A unique travel experience awaits on the Twilight Express Mizukaze, a luxury sleeper train in Japan that offers a lavish journey through scenic landscapes. Launched by JR West in 2017, this extraordinary train features elements usually reserved for high-end hotels, including a Michelin-star dining car and a suite that occupies an entire carriage.

Unlike typical train journeys, which may evoke memories of local services such as LNER or Avanti, the Twilight Express Mizukaze transports its guests across some of Japan’s most stunning routes, connecting Kyoto to Shimonoseki along the Sanin and Sanyo lines. With only 34 guests accommodated on board, the train offers a range of sleeping options from classic cabins to a luxurious full suite, complete with a bedroom, lounge, marble bathroom, and a private balcony.

The train’s construction is estimated to cost around ¥3 billion (approximately £15 million), designed to resemble a five-star hotel on wheels. It aims to provide visitors with the chance to “discover the allure of beautiful Japan from the comfort of a car with the superior quality of a hotel.”

Dining on the Twilight Express Mizukaze is a highlight, with an open kitchen led by Michelin-star chefs crafting exquisite meals that showcase local delicacies encountered during the journey. A menu curated by a chef from a three Michelin-star restaurant in Osaka features a variety of dishes inspired by the earth, sea, and land. A recent traveler, known as Trek Trendy, shared his excitement on YouTube, describing the experience as “really special” and recalling the thrill of trying puffer fish for the first time.

The design of the train merges Art Deco elegance with modern luxury, creating a nostalgic atmosphere that feels reminiscent of a steampunk science fiction setting. The amenities on board include a bar and two glass observation cars, perfect for enjoying panoramic views of Japan’s mountainous terrain.

Despite its appeal, securing a ticket for the Twilight Express Mizukaze is not straightforward. Access is granted through a lottery system, and prices are steep. A night in the royal twin room costs around £2,000, while those seeking the opulent suites may pay upwards of £33,000 for their journey.

This exceptional travel experience represents not just a journey through Japan but also a luxurious lifestyle that many aspire to enjoy. As travelers yearn for unique and unforgettable adventures, the Twilight Express Mizukaze stands out as a premier option for those willing to invest in an extraordinary escape.
