Experience Luxury on Japan’s Twilight Express Mizukaze Train

The luxurious Twilight Express Mizukaze train offers an unparalleled travel experience through Japan, combining opulence with breathtaking scenery. Launched by JR West in 2017, this sleeper train transports a select group of just 34 guests between historic cities such as Kyoto and Shimonoseki over several days.

Passengers can enjoy an array of accommodations, ranging from classic sleeping cars to a full carriage suite that features a bedroom, lounge, marble bathroom, and private balcony. It is estimated that the train itself is worth around 3 billion yen (approximately £15 million), aiming to provide a five-star hotel experience on tracks. The company highlights the journey as an opportunity to “discover the allure of beautiful Japan from the comfort of a car with the superior quality of a hotel.”

As for dining, the experience is nothing short of exceptional. The train boasts an open kitchen staffed by Michelin-starred chefs who serve a menu showcasing local delicacies inspired by the regions traveled through southern Japan. The culinary offerings are curated by a local chef who operates a renowned three Michelin star restaurant in Osaka. A recent traveler, known as Trek Trendy, shared his experience on YouTube, expressing astonishment at the quality of the food. He remarked, “It’s been really special, hasn’t it. I can’t quite believe I tried puffer-fish!”

Unique Design and Amenities

The aesthetics of the Twilight Express Mizukaze are equally impressive, blending art deco elements with modern luxury in a style the train describes as “nostalgic modern.” This unique design evokes a steampunk feel, creating an atmosphere that is both elegant and inviting. Guests can unwind at the train’s bar or relax in one of the two glass observation cars, ideal for taking in the picturesque landscapes as the train glides through mountainous regions.

Despite the allure of this unique travel experience, securing a ticket is not straightforward. Access to the train is determined by a lottery system, and prices reflect its exclusivity. For instance, a night in the royal twin room costs around £2,000, while more lavish suites can lead to ticket prices exceeding £33,000.

While not everyone can afford this exquisite journey, the Twilight Express Mizukaze stands as a testament to the heights of luxury travel, drawing attention from enthusiasts and casual travelers alike. Those who are fortunate enough to secure a ticket can expect an unforgettable experience that melds fine dining, elegant accommodations, and stunning views of Japan’s beautiful landscapes.
