CATL Launches Innovative TENER Stack at Smarter E South America

CATL, a global frontrunner in energy storage solutions, showcased its latest innovation, the TENER Stack, during its inaugural participation in the Smarter E South America 2025. This exhibition, recognized as the largest energy storage event on the continent, provided a platform for CATL to highlight its commitment to sustainable energy development in South America.

The TENER Stack is touted as the world’s first stackable energy storage system with a capacity of 9 MWh. It is designed to be adaptable across various cell technologies, ensuring it can withstand different environmental conditions. The system promises either up to five years of zero degradation or enhanced high-temperature resistance, making it particularly suitable for the diverse climates found throughout South America.

Ray See, Executive President of the Americas Energy Storage Business Division, emphasized Brazil’s unique position in the energy storage landscape. “Brazil possesses one of the most diversified applications of energy storage systems in the world,” he stated. This sentiment aligns with findings from BloombergNEF, which indicates that Brazil’s energy storage sector is on the verge of significant expansion. By 2050, the country will require over $6 trillion in energy investment to achieve its Net Zero targets, illustrating the immense growth potential in the region.

The TENER Stack addresses the increasing demand for flexible energy solutions amid Brazil’s renewable energy-dominated grid. With the capability to store enough energy to fully charge 45 electric buses, each equipped with 200 kWh battery packs, the system offers substantial benefits. It can also supply an average Brazilian household with electricity for six years, utilizing land area 45% more efficiently than conventional systems.

One of the key advantages of the TENER Stack is its transport efficiency. The system’s “two-in-one” design weighs less than 36 tonnes, allowing it to comply with transport regulations in 99% of global markets. Its compatibility with standard shipping methods is expected to reduce transport costs by up to 35%. Furthermore, the design ensures stability, even on routes with bridges, tunnels, and rural infrastructure challenges.

Safety features are paramount in the TENER Stack. It employs lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry, known for its thermal stability, and is equipped with advanced gas sensors that are 40% more sensitive, enabling fire suppression systems to activate 35% faster. The system also boasts triple-layer insulation, providing up to two hours of fire resistance, and meets IEEE693 seismic standards, making it resilient against strong earthquakes and hurricanes.

The challenges in South America, such as frequent grid fluctuations and high ambient temperatures, were taken into account in the TENER Stack’s design. The new gas sensors have a maintenance-free lifespan of 10 years, a significant improvement over traditional sensors that require replacement every two years. This advancement aims to minimize operational interruptions in remote locations.

In addition to the TENER Stack, CATL offers a diverse portfolio of energy solutions, including the EnerOne+ and TENER series, tailored for off-grid, commercial, and utility-scale projects. These products are designed to withstand the humid conditions of rainforests and can operate reliably in extreme temperatures ranging from -35°C to 55°C.

CATL’s commitment to South America’s energy future is evident through its involvement in the Registro Energy Storage Project, Brazil’s first utility-scale storage initiative launched in 2022. The project has become a benchmark in the region, recently expanding its first power station, marking a pivotal moment for CATL within the local market.

With plans to establish a new office in Chile this September, CATL aims to strengthen its presence across South America, enhancing local support and innovation. The company is also expanding its operations in Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic.

As of the end of the first half of 2025, CATL’s energy storage system products have been deployed in over 2,000 projects worldwide, demonstrating their adaptability across various climates and operational environments. For four consecutive years, CATL has maintained the top position in global energy storage battery shipments, with over 93 GWh deployed in the market.

Through innovations like the TENER Stack, CATL continues to push boundaries in the energy storage sector, reinforcing its commitment to facilitating a smooth transition to clean energy for its partners in South America and beyond.
