Uber is set to launch a targeted ride service for teenagers across Australia on Friday, March 15, 2024. This new initiative allows children aged 13 and older to travel with drivers who have undergone a working with children’s check. Parents will have the ability to track their children’s journeys in real time, enhancing the safety of this ride-sharing option.
The Uber for Teens service has been operational in Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory since its initial rollout in April 2022. Its expansion into New South Wales, Victoria, and Western Australia marks a significant step in Uber’s efforts to cater to families seeking safe transportation solutions for their teenagers.
To ensure safety, Uber will only allow high-rated and experienced drivers to participate in this service. Enhanced features will include a three-way intercom, a four-digit PIN for verification, and optional audio recording of each trip. The service will incur an additional fee of $2 per ride, which will help cover the costs associated with obtaining the necessary working with children checks.
Uber Australia explained that the service was developed in response to challenges faced by modern families. The company emphasized that the teen accounts are designed to promote transparency, enabling parents to access flexible transportation options while maintaining oversight of their children’s whereabouts.
Emma Foley, Uber’s Director of Mobility Operations, highlighted the importance of independence for young riders. “We are pleased to be providing Australian families with a solution that has been tried, tested, and trusted by many other families around the world, helping alleviate these common pain points with an alternative transport option built with safety in mind,” she stated.
The initiative also draws on collaboration with Safe Kids Worldwide, a US-based organization that contributed to the development of this new feature. This partnership underscores Uber’s commitment to improving safety standards and addressing the concerns of parents when it comes to their children’s transportation needs.
