Travelers seeking a cost-effective and scenic route to Sydney from Griffith can now take advantage of enhanced train services. The recently upgraded Griffith Train Station offers a modern and accessible travel option, making it an attractive alternative to flying. This positive shift is timely, given ongoing financial pressures on households across the region.
The station’s renovation, which was completed on August 28, 2023, involved a significant investment of $5 million under the Safe Accessible Transport (SAT) program. The upgrades have improved safety and accessibility for all passengers, including those with disabilities, parents with prams, and travelers with luggage. Enhancements such as better lighting, new security cameras, and an accessible ramp have replaced outdated facilities.
According to a Transport NSW TrainLink timetable, two trains operate weekly from Griffith to Sydney and vice versa. The Xplorer service departs from Griffith on Thursdays and Sundays at 07:31 and arrives in Sydney around 16:15. The return services operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays, providing a convenient travel option for both locals and visitors.
Griffith Mayor Doug Curran highlighted the growing interest in train travel, particularly as recent airline issues have left many passengers seeking alternatives. “People are looking for other ways to get to and from Sydney, and trains are a wonderful way to relax and see some countryside,” Curran stated. He noted that previous accessibility issues at the heritage-listed station have now been addressed through the recent upgrades.
Before the renovations, the station’s accessibility was limited. Curran explained, “While there was a wheelchair ramp, it didn’t have stairs associated or the right gradient.” He expressed optimism about the improvements, emphasizing their importance for regular commuters and their overall impact on the community.
The upgrades align with the New South Wales government’s broader commitment to enhance public transport infrastructure across the region. Jenny Aitchison, the Minister for Regional Transport, affirmed that these changes aim to make public transport safer and more inclusive. “Our regions rely on good transport links to connect us to communities, work opportunities, health care, services and education,” she remarked.
The community’s input played a crucial role in shaping these enhancements. Helen Dalton, Member for Murray, acknowledged the importance of feedback in delivering a station that meets the needs of all users. “Delivering improvements to amenity, access, and safety for the community is important,” she said, highlighting the necessity of compliance with Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport.
Additionally, Bob Nanva, Labor Duty MLC for Murray, emphasized the importance of modern, accessible transport infrastructure for regional communities. He pointed out that these upgrades ensure that individuals with disabilities, parents with prams, and older residents can travel with greater ease and confidence.
The revitalized Griffith Train Station now stands as a testament to the commitment to improve public transport connectivity in the region. With affordable fares—around $100—and a journey that showcases the scenic beauty of the countryside, the train service is poised to attract more travelers looking for a relaxing and budget-friendly travel option.
As the region adapts to changing travel preferences, the upgraded train service highlights not only the commitment to safety and accessibility but also the potential for a more sustainable approach to regional travel.
