Bailey Smith Reveals Month in Psychiatric Ward Amid Recovery

BREAKING: Geelong Cats star Bailey Smith has candidly revealed that he spent a month in a psychiatric ward during a challenging period last season. This urgent disclosure comes as Smith continues his journey to mental wellness while preparing for the 2025 AFL season.

Just days ago, Smith made waves at the AFL Awards, where he was honored for his first-ever All-Australian selection. However, the pressure to perform weighed heavily on him, prompting his brave decision to seek help at the Epworth Mental Health Clinic for four weeks.

“It was about a year ago that I got out of the psych ward,” Smith shared during his acceptance speech. “I went through a really dark time and I didn’t think I would get to the other side.”

In December 2023, Smith tore his anterior cruciate ligament, sidelining him for the entire 2024 season with the Western Bulldogs. This injury not only affected his game but also led to a significant identity crisis, forcing him to confront his mental health head-on.

“I know it is just an injury, but until you experience it and have your sense of identity taken away, it’s tough,” Smith stated. “I’m super grateful to be on the other side of it.” With the unwavering support of his family and manager Robbie, Smith has made remarkable progress.

Smith emphasized the importance of seeking help, urging the community to normalize mental health treatment. “If we can normalize that, the better we can see the community become,” he said. His heartfelt message resonated with many, as he encouraged others to reach out during their darkest times.

“Just always know that whatever dark period you are going through, one day it will make sense,” Smith added. “It’s a tough period, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

As Smith embarks on a new chapter with the Geelong Cats, he remains focused on his mental health journey. The athlete is rumored to be dating influencer Tammy Hembrow, adding a personal touch to his life as he navigates this crucial phase.

As Bailey Smith’s story unfolds, it serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health awareness, urging everyone to prioritize their well-being.
