Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued as Icy Blast Hits Riverina

URGENT UPDATE: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for the Riverina as a vigorous icy blast sweeps through the region, leaving destruction in its wake. The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed the alert shortly before 2:30 PM on August 29, impacting areas from Hay and Deniliquin in the west to Narrandera and Albury in the east.

Residents are urged to stay vigilant as damaging winds are expected to intensify. As of 3:30 PM, Wagga was not yet under the warning, but forecasts predict possible damaging winds as the cold front progresses across southern New South Wales. “Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours,” the bureau reported, affecting locations including Griffith, Corowa, and more.

Wind gusts are already alarming, with a peak of 98 km/h recorded at Hay Airport just after 2 PM. Meanwhile, Deniliquin experienced gusts of 87 km/h, leading to downed tree branches and scattered debris, including a trampoline displaced onto a nature strip. Narrandera reported a significant 82 km/h gust at 3:20 PM.

The severe weather is expected to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms to Wagga this afternoon, with a high probability of damaging winds and small hail. Citizens are advised to secure loose items around their properties and move vehicles away from trees. The State Emergency Service has issued a warning for potential property damage and risks to livestock, particularly lambs and sheep, due to the harsh conditions.

Looking ahead, snow showers are anticipated in higher areas above 700 metres, with significant accumulations possible around Batlow (780 metres) and Laurel Hill (1,045 metres). Temperatures are expected to plummet, with a maximum of only 12 degrees forecasted for Wagga on Saturday.

Residents are urged to stay informed and take precautions as the weather situation develops. For emergency assistance during floods and storms, contact the SES at 132 500.

Stay tuned for the latest updates as this situation evolves.
